Commonly asked questions and answers

Have questions about scheduling or what to expect? Here are answers to common inquiries to help you feel fully prepared.

An endocrinologist is a physician who specializes in hormones and the glands that make them. That includes diabetes, thyroid disease, osteoporosis, PCOS, menopause-related hormone changes, and low testosterone. Many people are referred when a hormone condition is hard to control, when they start insulin or a device like a pump, or when they want a specialist to review their overall plan. At Miami Health Center, endocrinology and primary care work side by side.

It depends on your insurance plan. Some plans, including many Medicare Advantage and HMO plans, require a referral from your primary care provider before a specialist visit. Others let you book directly. Our front desk works with Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage, Commercial, Marketplace, and Medicaid plans every day and can tell you what your plan needs. If you are already a primary care patient here, the referral can often be handled within our office.

Yes. Insulin pump and CGM management is done in-house. Our endocrinology team helps with device setup, reviews the data your device collects, and adjusts settings and insulin doses at your visits. If you are new to a pump or sensor, we walk you through how it works and what to watch for, in English or Spanish.

Most hormone conditions are diagnosed and tracked through blood work, and our office draws labs on site during your visit. Depending on your condition, your provider may also order imaging or a bone density scan through an outside facility. We explain what each test measures and why it matters for your plan, and we review results with you in plain language rather than just sending a number.

Yes. We care for adults with Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes, and prediabetes. For Type 1, that usually includes insulin management, pump and CGM support, and close monitoring. For Type 2, it may include lifestyle guidance, oral medications, injectable therapies, or insulin, depending on what your body needs. In both cases the goal is a plan that fits your life and is reviewed regularly.

It varies by condition and how stable things are. Newly diagnosed patients, or those starting a new medication or device, are usually seen more often at first. Once a condition is well managed, visits typically space out to routine follow-ups with lab work in between. Your provider will set a schedule with you and adjust it as your needs change.
