Your visit starts with vital signs such as blood pressure, heart rate, and weight, followed by a review of your health history, medications, and any concerns you bring. Your provider then performs a physical exam and orders lab work, which can be drawn in our office the same day. Before you leave, you get a summary of what was found and a plan for any follow-up.
An annual physical is a hands-on exam of your body and overall health. A Medicare Annual Wellness Visit is a yearly planning appointment that Medicare offers: it reviews your history, risk factors, and recommended screenings, and produces a written prevention plan. It is not a full physical exam. Many patients do both, and our front desk can help you understand what your plan covers before you book.
Bring your insurance card, a photo ID, and a list of all medications and supplements with doses. If lab work is planned, ask our office whether you should fast beforehand, since some tests require it. Write down any symptoms or questions ahead of time, and bring records or results from other doctors if you have them. Wearing comfortable clothing makes the exam easier.
That depends on your age, sex, family history, and personal risk factors. Common screenings for adults include blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, and cancer screenings appropriate for your age. Your provider reviews the current guidelines with you and recommends what fits your situation, rather than ordering everything for everyone. Screenings done outside our office, such as imaging, are coordinated and tracked by our team.
Most commercial, employer, Marketplace, and Medicaid plans cover a yearly preventive visit, though details vary and some services during the visit may be billed separately. Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage cover the Annual Wellness Visit once every 12 months for eligible patients. Because coverage rules change, the best step is to call our office with your plan information before your visit so we can verify what applies to you.
Plan for more time than a routine sick visit. A thorough physical includes your history, the exam itself, lab draws, and a conversation about results and next steps, so we would rather not rush it. Arriving a few minutes early with your paperwork and medication list helps the visit run smoothly. Our front desk can give you a closer estimate when you book.
