An insulin pump is a small device that delivers insulin through a tiny tube under the skin, replacing most daily injections. A continuous glucose monitor, or CGM, is a sensor worn on the body that measures glucose around the clock and sends readings to a phone or receiver. Some people use one, some use both, and certain systems connect the two so the pump responds to sensor readings.
Many adults with Type 1 diabetes and some with Type 2 benefit from these devices, especially those who take insulin several times a day, have hard-to-predict blood sugar swings, or want fewer finger sticks. Whether a device is right for you depends on your diabetes, your comfort with technology, and your insurance coverage. Our endocrinology team reviews all three with you before recommending anything.
No. Setup, training, and follow-up for insulin pumps and CGMs are handled in our Miami office as part of your endocrinology care. Some device manufacturers also offer their own training resources, and we can point you to those as a supplement, but the clinical decisions about your settings and doses stay with our physicians.
More often at the start, when we are learning how your body responds, and less often once things are stable. At each visit our team reviews your device data alongside your lab work and adjusts basal rates, insulin-to-carb ratios, correction factors, or targets as needed. Between visits, call our office if you notice a pattern that concerns you rather than waiting.
Coverage varies widely by plan and by device. Many Medicare, Medicare Advantage, Commercial, Marketplace, and Medicaid plans cover these devices for patients who meet certain criteria, and some require documentation or prior approval from the prescribing physician. Our office is familiar with these requirements and helps with the paperwork, but we recommend calling your plan, or asking our front desk, before assuming a specific device is covered.
