Bring your driver's license, a list of all medications with doses and the name of the prescribing provider, and your glasses, contacts, or hearing aids if you use them. If you have a condition such as diabetes, sleep apnea, or a heart problem, bring recent records, such as lab results, a CPAP usage report, or a letter from your specialist. Having these ready avoids a return visit.
The DOT physical checks your vision and hearing, blood pressure and pulse, and a urine sample screened for protein, blood, and sugar. The examiner reviews your health history and performs a hands-on physical exam covering your heart, lungs, and other systems the federal standards require. The urine test is not a drug test, though your employer may require one separately.
Under federal rules, a medical examiner's certificate can be issued for up to 24 months. Drivers with certain conditions, such as high blood pressure or diabetes treated with insulin, may receive a shorter certificate and need to recertify more often. Your examiner will tell you the length of your certificate and what, if anything, is needed to keep it current.
